New Delhi, 22 February 2013: Ninth-ranked Japan outplayed twelfth-ranked India 3-2 (2-2) in the toughest match of the Hero Women’s Hockey World League Round 2, Delhi 2013 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today.

 

Japan dominated the first half of the match and scored two goals to take the lead. Japan’s Shiho Sakai and Akiko Ota scored in 4th min – PC and 31st min – PC respectively.

 

India came back strongly in the second half and equalized the score within 30 minutes. Soundarya Yendala (62nd min – PC) and Anupa Barla (65th min) scored two goals for India and made the match alive.

 

With the cheerful support from the crowd, Indian girls kept attacking in the Japanese half and tried to score more goals. However, Japanese defenders restricted the scoreline 2-2 at full-time and both the teams headed for penalty shootout.

 

In the shootout, Japan beat India 3-2 and collected three points. Mazuki Arai, Yuri Nagai and skipper Rika Komazawa scored goals quite easily for Japan whereas Soundarya Yendala and Rani scored for India. Chanchan Devi Thokchom, captain Ritu Rani and Vandana Katariya failed to edge past Japanese goalie Ryoko Oie and missed their chances.

 

Aki Mitsuhashi was adjudged as the Hero Player of the Match.

 

Meanwhile, 20th-ranked Russian women’s team thrashed 33rd–ranked Kazakhstan 8-1 in a one-sided match on the fifth day of the Hero HWL Round 2 matches.

 

Alina Krasnoperova (11th min), Ekaterina Shaburova (25th min), Kristina Shumilina (39th min), Daria Vasileva (50th min – PC), Tamara Ivanova (52nd min & 59th min) and Evgenia Sorokina (64th min) scored for Russia.

 

Vera Domashneva scored the consolation goal for Kazakhstan in 41st minute. Ekaterina Shaburova from Russia was adjudged as Player of the Match for her attacking game.

Russia will now face India on Sunday, 24 February 2013 at 18:00 and Kazakhstan will play against Fiji on Sunday, 24 February 2013 at 10:00.

 

In other one-sided women’s match of the day, 22nd–ranked Malaysia slashed 59th–ranked Fiji 12-0 as Malaysia dominated minnows Fiji through-out the match.

 

Fazilla Sylvester Silin (6th min & 58th min), Nadia Abdul (11th min – PS, 40th min & 68th min), Nor Azlin Sumantri (15th min – PC & 33rd min), Siti Rahmah Othman (43rd min), Siti Noor Amarina (44th min, 66th min – PC & 69th min – PC) and Din Juliani Mohamad (53rd min – PC) scored for Malaysia.

 

Malaysia captain Nadia Abdul Rahman was adjudged as Player of the Match.

 

Malaysia will now face Japan on Sunday, 24 February 2013 at 14:00 and Fiji will play against Kazakhstan on Sunday, 24 February 2013 at 10:00.
