New Delhi, 15 October 2013: Hockey India today announced the appointment of Mr. Terence Walsh as Chief Coach of the Senior Men National Hockey Team who has vast experience of coaching and represented Australia in three Olympics.
Hockey India Secretary General Dr. Narinder Batra said that the appointment of Mr. Terence Walsh is an important step to ensure an appropriate program is in place for our senior men team. 2014 is an important year for Indian Hockey. The season which commence with World League Round 4 at Delhi and terminates with Champions Trophy in India. In between the team will be participating in three very important and prestigious events i.e FIH Men’s World Cup, Commonwealth Games & Asian Games.
“Mr. Terence will provide the adequate guidance and motivation to the team. He not only has the experience but also has a vision to develop senior men hockey team as a well knit professional unit” said Dr. Batra.
Mr. Terence Walsh who is ready to commence his role with Hockey India said “The opportunity to head the Indian coaching team is extremely humbling. Coaching India must be regarded as the greatest challenge in the hockey world.
The world’s richest history in our sport combined with the great passion of Indian hockey sets an incredible platform for excitement, but also expectations in this country”.
“I look forward to working with the players, the coaching staff, Hockey India and the Sports Authority of India in ensuring no stone is left unturned with India’s quest to return to the performance pinnacle of world hockey” said Mr. Walsh.
Mr. Terence Walsh who worked as Technical Director with USA field Hockey from 2005-2012, pursued his coaching career in 1990 where he worked as head coach of the Malaysian National Hockey team till 1994. He also worked as head coach of the Australian National team from 1997-2000 and under his coaching the team had won Commonwealth Games in 1998, Champions Trophy in 1999 and a Bronze medal at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. In 2004, Terry worked as head coach of the Netherlands hockey team that won Silver medal at the Athens Olympic Games same year.
Terence Walsh is an International Hockey Federation (FIH) Master Coach. As a player Mr. Walsh has 175 international caps and has represented Australia in four World Cup campaigns and three Olympic Games including a silver medal at the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

Ropni Kumari, Indian Women’s Hockey Team defender, looked back on the previous year and explained how consistent opportunities to play with the Indian Junior Women's Hockey Team have contributed to her development. The 19-year-old was part of the team that claimed the Gold medal at the Women's Junior Asia Cup 2023 and also travelled with the team to Dusseldorf, Germany for the 2023 4 Nations Junior Women's Invitational Tournament. Ropni was also a key player for the side at the 2023 FIH Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile and played in all six games.
