Kollam, February 10 2019: Hockey Jharkhand beat Hockey Haryana 2-1 in the final of the 9th Hockey India Junior Women National Championship 2019 (A Div) played at the Hockey Stadium here today. Meanwhile, Hockey Mizoram beat Uttar Pradesh Hockey 2-0 in Bronze medal match.

Hockey Jharkhand came out on top with a rounded performance where their defence and forward line was better than Hockey Haryana’s. The first two quarters of the match went goalless, thanks to some solid defending from both the sides.

Third quarter is when both the sides went for glory. In a span of nine minutes, Hockey Jharkhand scored two goals to open a 2-0 lead. Reshma Soreng converted a penalty corner in the 31st minute followed by a field goal from Priya Dungdung. With just over a minute to go before the end of 3rd quarter, Hockey Haryana pulled back one via penalty corner as Chetna scored the goal in the 44th minute.

With an entire quarter left, Hockey Haryana was optimistic to come back in the contest. But Hockey Jharkhand’s resolute defence ensured the scoreline, which was 2-1 at the end of 3rd quarter, remained the same at the end of regulation time.

In the Bronze medal match, Hockey Mizoram got the better of Uttar Pradesh Hockey 2-0. A goal apiece in the first and second quarter settled the matter in favour of Hockey Mizoram to finish third in the competition. With just over a minute left for the end of 1st quarter, Lalrinfeli opened the account for Hockey Mizoram. Second quarter, F Lalawmpuii scored the second for her side in the 19th to make it 2-0.

The last two quarters didn’t see any clear chances and Hockey Mizoram did well to keep all forays into their circle by Uttar Pradesh Hockey at bay. By the end of regulation time, Hockey Mizoram emerged victorious.
