Pune, 15 November 2017: In an exciting day two at the second edition of the Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship 2017 (Men), closely fought matches kept the local crowds enthralled here at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium in Balewadi, Pune on Wednesday.

With the first match between hosts Hockey Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh Hockey fought till the final hooter, top quality hockey skills came to the fore with Uttar Pradesh Hockey narrowly winning the match 8-7 with goals by Pal Raj Kumar and Ajay Yadav in the 28th and 30th minute respectively. It was Devinder Walmiki who starred for Hockey Maharashtra with four splendid goals in the 3rd, 6th, 13th and 27th minute giving the home team an early 1-0 head start. Vikram Yadav doubled the lead with a 5th minute goal. Almost immediately, Ajay Yadav (5’) struck one for Uttar Pradesh Hockey to narrow the lead. But the visitors gradually progressed into the match, patiently getting past the hosts defence to score. Goals by Sumit Kumar (7’, 22’), Raj Kumar Pal (16’), Atul Deep (17’), Ajay Yadav (23’) helped Uttar Pradesh Hockey clinch the winning points. Aniket Gurav (18’ and 27’) too scored a double for hosts but in vain.

In the second match, Hockey Karnataka scored a swift 5-1 win against Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu. After a 1-1 stalemate at the start of the match with Mouseen Mohammed Raheel (2’) and S Niranjan Sai Ganesh (6′) opening the scoreboard for Hockey Karnataka and Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu respectively, goals by KR Bharath (9’), Sudev B Abharan (20’ and 24’), Pruthviraj GN (20’) helped Hockey Karnataka register a strong victory.

Hockey Haryana, on the other hand, posted a dominating 9-2 win against Hockey Jharkhand in the third match of the day. Hockey Haryana were on top of their game right from the start with as many as five goals coming in the first 12 minutes of the match. While Sher Singh (7’), Munish Rana (9’), Jagwant Singh (11’ , 12’), Hartaj Aujla Singh (12’) gave a strong start to Hockey Haryana, goals by Vishal Dahiya (27’), Munish Rana (28’), Jagwant Singh (29’, 30’) clinched the match for them. For Hockey Jharkhand, Noyel Topno (20’) and Jen Soreng (28’) were the only two to score.

In the last match of the day, Hockey Punjab held their nerve till the final hooter to beat Hockey Odisha 6-5. Though Hockey Odisha began well with a 3-1 lead in the first quarter with goals by Sanjay Xalxo (2’), Teophil Kujur (9’) and Nilam Sanjeep Xess (10’), Hockey Punjab bounced back in the second quarter with four back-to-back goals. Baljinder Singh (4’), Amanpreet Singh (16’) Dharminder Singh (17’) scored a goal each for Hockey Punjab but it was Jarmanpreet Singh who starred in their win with three goals in the 11th, 15th and 29th minute. Though Nilam and Rakesh Tete scored in the 22nd and 25th minute respectively for Hockey Odisha, it was not enough to stop Hockey Punjab from notching up the winners points.
