Incheon (South Korea), 22nd September 2014: Facing Thailand in their opening match of the 17th Asian Games today, the Indian Women Hockey Team starts their outing with a 3-0 win at Soenhak Hockey Stadium.

Converting one penalty corner each successfully, it was Poonam Rani, Vandana Katariya and Vice-Captain Deepika who ensured a 3-0 clean sweep against Thailand and registering the team’s first win in the tournament.

Opening the first half with great attack coming in from both the ends, the score board saw 0-0 until the 14th minute when India secured a penalty corner opportunity and Poonam Rani made no mistake in converting it into a goal and opening the account for India.

The second half saw a dry, when both the team concentrated on defence and none of the two could sneak in a goal. It was later in the third quarter, when India earned another penalty corner in the 39th minute and Vandana Katariya’s fierce shot ensured the second goal for India taking the score line to 2-0.

In the final quarter it was the Vice-Captain Deepika, who sneaked in the last penalty corner in the 53rd minute of the match to seal the game with a 3-0 win. The match saw the Indian Women Hockey team dominating in all the four quarters as they penetrated the opponents defence frequently but did not allow Thailand to do any damage to the 3-0 clean sweep.

India will be playing their second match against China on 24th September 2014 at 1330hrs IST.
