India defeats Spain 4-2, enters Semi-finals of Women’ Junior Hockey World Cup
New Delhi, 01 August 2013: India defeated higher-ranked Spain 4-2 to enter the semi-finals of the Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2013 played at Monchengladbach, Germany today.
India scored twice in each half through Monika (10th minute), Navneet Kaur (34thminute), Vandana Katariya (41st minute) and Rani (48th minute) while Spain’s goals came from Xantal Gine (7th minute) and Captain Berta Bonastra (30th minute).
Spain scored their first goal through Xantal Gine, who converted penalty corner in the 7th minute while three minutes later India equalized through field goal scored by Monika.
Spain again took lead in the 30th minute before Navneed Kaur scored through reverse stick shot in the 34th minute. India put in their efforts in the second half and scored their third goal through Vandana Katariya in the 41st minute and seven minutes later Rani extended India’s lead and made the scoreline 4-2.
Spain tried to put pressure on the Indian defence to make a comeback in the match but they were denied any scoring chances.
This is the first time that India had qualified for the Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup semi finals.
India will now take on the winners of the last quarter-final match between Netherlands and South Africa, in the semi-final match to be played on Friday.
