New Delhi, 17 October 2013: Hockey India today felicitated the Junior Men Hockey Team at Hotel The Lalit in New Delhi for recognition of winning the gold medal at the 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup in Johor Bahru, Malaysia last month.

In the felicitation ceremony, Chief Guest Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent Charge) Mr. Jitendra Singh awarded cheques of Rupees One Lakh to each player of the Junior Men Hockey team and their National Coach Gregg Clark. Also a cheque of Rupees Fifty Thousand was awarded to each member of the teams support staff.

The midfielder Harjeet Singh was awarded an additional cheque of Rupees One Lakh for winning Most Promising Player of the Tournament Award in the 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup.

Also during the felicitation ceremony cash awards were presented to the members of Senior Men and Women team. Dragflicker V R Raghunath who won Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament and Goalkeeper P R Sreejesh who was declared Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the 9th Men’s Asia Cup were awarded a cheque of rupees One lakh each. Forward Ramandeep Singh was also awarded a cheque of Rupees One Lakh for scoring a maiden goal in his debut match at the 9th Men Asia Cup.

Goalkeeper Savita, member of the Senior Women team who was declared Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the 8th Women’s Asia Cup was also awarded cheque of Rupees One Lakh.

During the felicitation forward Rani, member of the Senior Women Team was presented a trophy for completing her 100 International Caps in the match against Malaysia at the 8th Women’s Asia Cup last month.

Mr. Rajiv Gupta, Secretary Ministry of Sports, Mr. Jiji Thomson, Director General Sports Authority of India, Dr. Sunil Bharati, Head Corporate Communications and Affairs, Cairn India felicitated the Players & Support Staff and Mr. Harbinder Singh (Government Observer) also felicitated the players and support staff.

Hon’ble Minister Mr. Jitendra Singh wished good luck to the Indian team for the forthcoming Asian Champions Trophy to be held in Japan. “It’s a proud moment that our hockey teams are winning medals in various prestigious tournaments. The Government of India will give its full support to the game of hockey and we hope that our teams will bring laurels to the nation” said Mr. Jitendra Singh.

Hockey India Secretary General Dr. Narinder Batra said it’s a proud moment that Junior Men Team won the title of the Sultan of Johor Cup but the real test for the junior side will be the FIH Junior Men’s World Cup to be held in New Delhi from 6-15 December 2013. “Hockey India will not leave any stone unturned in the preparations of the team for this prestigious tournament where we should be getting good results” said Dr. Batra.

During the felicitation ceremony Mr. Rajeev Mehta, Associate Vice-President Hockey India, Group Captain R K Raksha, SSCB, Mr. Rajinder Singh, Executive Director Teams (SAI) and Mr. Rajesh Kurup, General Manager, Corporate Reputation and Branding Cairn India were also present.
