Ensure the initial pressure by getting the all important first goal in our name: Chief Coach, Paul van Ass, India Men Hockey Team

15 June 2015, New Delhi: With the Fintro FIH World League Semi-Finals just around the corner the Indian Hockey team, the Chief Coaches of both the teams are working on strategies with their respective teams which will help them put a strong fight against opponents and win matches.

Speaking on the practice matches, Chief Coach Paul van Ass said “The practice matches were a huge learning for the Team. While we won the match against France we narrowly lost to Belgium. What came out for me is that we have to increase the pressure on the opponents from the start. We need to work on getting penalty corners in our name apart from looking at the capitalizing on opportunities in the D. While the boys did a good job in breaking the defence chain of the opponents, they need to ensure they yield results. Getting the initial goal in our name will help us build the pressure. ”.

Speaking on the defence he added “The defence looked strong in both the matches. While we conceded two goals against Belgium, the positive that I take from the game is that the boys are closing the gaps now”.

Speaking on women’s team’s practice and the tournament, Chief Coach, Mathias Ahrens said “Our first match is against the host team – Belgium. They will have just one advantage over us that will be playing in front of their home crowd. Besides this I think the teams will be evenly placed and all will depend on the initial pressure. On that front I think we have a strong attack and I am confident of a good start. The girls realize that continuing ball possession in the opponents D is important and the team is working on short passes and their reaction time once in the D as time will be the key. They have to enter, finish the job in a matter of seconds.”
