Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, 19th January 2017: Day 9 of the Hockey India 7th Sub Junior National Hockey Championship 2017 (Women) ‘A’ Division saw four highly competitive quarterfinals being played. 

In the first quarterfinal of the day, Uttar Pradesh Hockey beat Hockey Punjab in a closely contested match. Hockey Punjab, came out charging, looking to get off a good start and capitalize on Pooja’s successful attempt at a penalty stroke. However, Uttar Pradesh Hockey, who have been in good nick all through the tournament scored an equalizer in the 15th minute. Mumtaz Khan was the one to score and she came back in the 30th minute to convert a penalty corner. Her double goal ensured Uttar Pradesh Hockey went into the first half with a 2-1 lead. They kept up the momentum in the second half by playing good defence and take control of the game. They refused to let a goal slip past the keeper in favour of Hockey Punjab and thus held on to the victory and seal their semifinal berth. 

In the second quarterfinal, Hockey Haryana comfortably defeated Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy 6-1. Hockey Haryana’s Amandeep Kaur continue to impress with her form in this tournament as she scored two stunning goals in the 7th and 40th minute. Her early goal gave a big mental boost to Hockey Haryana who continued to score back-to-back goals via Simranjeet Kaur (10’), Sharmila Devi (31’) to ensure they had a 3-0 lead in the first half. They dominated the second half and showcased good teamwork as they scored in the 39th, 40th and 47th minute through captain Reet, Amandeep Kaur and Jyoti respectively. Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy’s captain Sadhna Sengar saved the blushes for her team when she converted a penalty corner in the 63rd minute to ensure they didn’t go goalless.

In a closely fought third quarterfinal of the day Hockey Chandigarh beat Hockey Odisha 1-0. The match was nothing but a battle of nerves with both teams showcasing high level of competitive spirit. It was not until the 47th minute that the first goal was scored through Preeti. Hockey Chandigarh could have been more disciplined in their game and avoided the two green cards handed to their players Monu and Kirandeep Kaur in the 25th and 65th minute respectively. Going into the all-important semifinal, they would want to put up a better show than today. 

In an exciting quarterfinal of the day, Hockey Jharkhand held their nerve to beat Hockey Gangpur- Odisha 4-3 in a shootout to make it to the semifinals. While Hockey Gangpur-Odisha began on a positive note by holding a 1-0 lead into the first half. Manisha Oram helped with an early lead as she successfully converted a penalty corner in the 17th minute of the match. However, a late field goal in the 50th minute through Sangita Kumari spoilt Hockey Gangpur-Odisha’s party. Both teams pressed hard for a goal but in vain resulting in a penalty shootout. But eventually, Hockey Jharkhand’s custodian Kalyani Kindo did a fine job in saving goals while Deepika Soreng, Sangita Kumari, Beauty Dungdung and captain Salima Tete scored in the shootout, thus helping their team stay in contention.  For Hockey Gangpur-Odisha, Namrata Jasmin Bara, Sushanti Minz and Jivan Kishori Toppo scored. 

The semifinals will be held on 21 January starting 1400hrs. The first semifinal will be played between Uttar Pradesh Hocke Vs Hockey Haryana at 1400hrs while Hockey Chandigarh will take on Hockey Jharkhand at 1600 hrs on Saturday.

Hockey India congratulates PR Sreejesh on being appointed Co-Chair of the FIH Athletes Committee

The International Hockey Federation, on Wednesday, announced the appointment of the new FIH Athletes Committee, to be led by Co-Chairs Camila Caram of Chile and PR Sreejesh of India. While Camila Caram has been assigned Co-Chair and Athletes Committee Representative in the Executive Board, Indian Men's Hockey Team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh is the Co-Chair and he will lead the planning and meetings along with Caram.
